Digicel Announces Computers for Schools Programme
“Extending the value of your service to benefit your favourite school”
Grenada – September 14th, 2009: Digicel the Caribbean’s largest mobile service provider with the assistance of the Ministry of Education has just announced a new initiative which would make computers and ancillary equipment available to schools in Grenada.
This new programme allows Digicel prepaid customers to extend the value of their top up vouchers to be able to benefit a school of their choice even as they enjoy the benefits of the Bigger, Better Network. Both electronic and digi-Flex cards are permitted. This programme is also open to postpaid customers who pay their bills in full and on time. Their bill amount will be added to the total amount for the school they select via sms code.
Every time a registered subscriber tops up, their recharge amount is matched against a computer fund for the school to earn the prize. The cost of registration and participation is a once off charge of 25 cents per text. Only one registration is allowed per person.
Currently 15 secondary schools have signed up to be part of the programme and Digicel looks forward to working with these schools and others to improve the lives of students and parents.
Each participating school will be assigned a code and persons wishing to be part of this allowing their top up benefit that school, simply has to text the assigned ‘schoolcode’ to “8638”. While all Digicel customers may register to the service, only actual top up attempts or bill payments will qualify to take part in the promotion.
This is another demonstration of Digicel’s commitment to the communities in which it operates by finding innovative ways to engage the community, to the benefit of the community. In this programme Digicel re-affirms its commitment to the education of the children of Grenada by giving schools a means of increasing their stock of computers and so assist in the education of the children.
“Computers have become a basic tool for education today, and students at any level of education without access to technology are at a disadvantage,” said Patricia Maher Country Manager, Digicel Grenada.
“We are thrilled at the Ministry of Education for this partnership with Digicel. This means that our schools will receive much needed computer equipment and supplies. As a corporate citizen and a company that prides itself on technology, this is definitely a step in the right direction” Mr. Julien Ogilvie continued.
This commitment by Digicel is for a period of 3 calendar years. In the first phase, PC’s will be offered followed by accessories such as printers, scanners, webcams etc. in 2010 and 2011.
