DIGICEL’S CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITIES PROJECTS
March 4th 2010 - DIGICEL’S CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITIES PROJECTS
St. George’s Grenada, March 3, 2010- Two community development centres were recipients of donations made by Digicel as part of their social Caring Connections programme. The first donation was 2 state of the art laptops with all the key features for use by the Grenada Basketball Association at the community centre on the Carenage.
Mr. Nigel “German” McKie was on hand to receive the equipment valued at $5000 and advised that the professional coaches would use the laptops post basketball games to send the results in real time to the media houses. The potential for sport and educational development are enriched by the presence of the centre and supply of the laptops.
The second funds valued at $15,000 were used to repair the roof of the community centre in Mont Toute that is run by Father Tommy Barrett and assisted by Mr. Cecil Benjamin.
The centre is used by women in the community who are skilled in the art of stained glass and currently a huge project to complete the stained glass windows for the Cathedral of St. George is underway. The potential for further development of this art form into sustainable craft business and employing the adults in the community is tremendous.
Patricia Maher, Country Manager for Digicel, who visited both centres on Wednesday March 3, said “At Digicel we are committed to ensuring that, as we grow as a company, the communities in which we operate grow with us. We pride ourselves not just on transforming telecommunications in Grenada but also on becoming part of the social fabric of this country and its people and moving forward together in a positive way.”
